A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch sends both data and power through the network cable, so IP cameras, phones and access points need no separate power adapter.

It simplifies installation of cameras, access points and IP phones, because one cable handles power and network, even in places without a power socket.

If your router doesn't have enough ports for all your wired devices, a switch adds more connections to your network.

The main types are unmanaged switches that just work out of the box, smart or managed switches with settings such as VLANs, and PoE switches that also power devices.

A small unmanaged gigabit switch with 5 to 8 ports suits most homes. Choose a PoE model if you connect cameras or access points.
