POS stands for point of sale, the place where a customer pays. A POS system combines hardware such as a touch terminal, barcode scanner, receipt printer and cash drawer with software that records sales, stock and payments.

In a retail shop the POS system is the checkout: it scans products, calculates the total, takes payment, prints the receipt and updates stock automatically, so you always know what sold and what to reorder.

At Cyprus PC, POS hardware starts from about €79 for a barcode scanner and goes up to around €1,100 for a complete all-in-one touch terminal. Software and card payment fees are separate and depend on the provider you choose.

Most retail shops need an all-in-one touch terminal, a barcode scanner, an 80mm receipt printer and a cash drawer. Choose a 2D scanner if you also scan QR codes or phone screens, and a wireless scanner for large items at the counter.

The main types are all-in-one touch terminals, PC based POS with separate peripherals, mobile or tablet POS, self-service kiosks and cloud based POS software. Shops and restaurants usually start with an all-in-one terminal.

A monthly fee usually covers the POS software subscription or card processing, not the hardware. The terminals, scanners and printers on this page are a one-off purchase with the manufacturer's warranty.

The main drawbacks are the upfront hardware cost, staff training and, for cloud software, the need for a stable internet connection. Buying reliable hardware with local support keeps downtime to a minimum.
